It has a higher elevation than the rest of the Umpqua Valley, and experiences milder temperatures and less frost and fog as a result. The soil is ideal for growing wine grapes as it easily drains and is rich in minerals. The main wine varietals produced in the Red Hills District are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling.
